Quilts in Action

I know it's been an age since the last post, but J and I have been in home improvement high gear this fall and the sewing has taken a back seat. Part of the motivation to get some house jobs done is our upcoming June wedding. This means there will be some frantic wedding related sewing, but I will post more on that in near future.

For now, here are two of my favourite little people enjoying quilts that I made for them!

Finally Using the Ghastlies

J got me this Alexander Henry 'Ghastlies' fabric ages ago and I have been waiting for the right inspiration to use it. I was also thinking about folks that I need to make quilts for and thumbing through Quilting Modern by Jacquie Gering and Katie Pedersen and have always liked the their Supernova quilt pattern. That is the inspiration for this one. I'm not quite sure how it will turn out (hopefully not Ghastlie), but there will be more than one star and I will have to figure out how to fit them together. Planning is not my style ;) More to come.

The Fruits of Our Labour

We spent a good part of the start of the week canning after a trip to Jean-Talon Market in Montreal.

We did sweet, sour and dill pickles, tomato sauce, peaches, peach walnut conserve and red pepper jelly. The basement shelves are stocked and I am looking forward to a little more sewing in my off hours.

Going Through the Archives

Early this summer during the destash I found these 9 patch and postage stamp blocks that I had pieced at least 3 years ago. I pulled them out along with the other fabric I had set aside for them and finally put them together. I knew I wanted to put them together 'quilt-as-you-go' style, but was undecided as to whether I should put all of the same block facing the same way, or switch it up.

As you can see, I switched it up. I still have 2 back seams to hand stitch and then a binding, but I am glad to see this come together after such a long time! I wonder what other treasures I'll unearth!

Daughters of Anarchy top is done!

So, I watched Sons of Anarchy the whole time I was putting this quit together and the quilt doesn't make me think bikes, guns and being badass, but there is no real pattern. I really just wanted to start using up scraps. The blocks were constructed over the past few weeks and in line with my 'no new fabric without a plan' rule, I did order the fabric used to make the posts and sashing.

I'm not sure where this one will go when it's finish or what I might use for the back, but I really enjoyed putting this top together and I actually edited and reconstructed a few blocks that were just not quite right which I rarely do. I was hoping the photos outside would be better, but when it's all done I'll get the real camera out and take some more.

If you are interested in this one, drop me a line.

In the Works

A few weeks ago I pulled out my big messy bag of scraps and sorted it into a few colour schemes. Sunday after far too many days away from the machine, I sat down to sew. This is small sample of what I have made with the scraps over the last few days.

When I look back at completed projects I think about what I watched while I was making it. And this weekend I had a marathon of Sons of Anarchy. Looking at these cheery, colourful blocks and thinking about that show seem at odds. But that's what I watched! It also is a way of figuring out how many hours I spent on a project.

What do you watch? How do you measure?

Thank You Pillows

I made these in May as a thank you to Sam who stayed with the furry crew while J and I were having an east coast adventure. It was a good way to get scrappy and it isn't shown here, but I used up some wacky Elvis fabric I got in Graceland a few years on the back.

Wonky Diamond in it's New Home

Last weekend J and I went A&B's wedding and they loved the Wonky Diamond! I would definitely make this pattern (see Sew Katie Did) again, but vow not to quilt any more queen-size quilts at home.

Big Sur Baby

I have had this half yard set of Birch's Big Sur for ages and yesterday finally busted it out.

I loved this quilt posted over at oh fransson and wanted to create my own version.

You can see the planning stages, I did a quick sketch, drew up some triangles in Illustrator and printed off the templates. This is a lot more planning than I usually do!

Finished top and back are shown here. I'm not totally sold on how it turned out, but I love the idea and will definitely add some little trees to my library. I'm looking forward to quilting this one and playing with all of that negative space.

Top Done!

It is finally a sunny day and I spent the first half piecing the top of this Queen (+) quilt.

I won't be quilting this one at home, but look forward to figuring out a back this week and sending it off to be quilted.

Next up: something a little smaller!

Also, a little shout out here on Elaine Quehl's blog from the class I took a few weeks ago with my dear friend Alli, also featured!

Time Marching On

This is a really low res picture of my latest project. It will be queen sized (about) by the time time I finish.

I'm not sure if it has a name, but I fell in love with the pattern when I saw it on Sew Katie Did.

I am off to my LQS for the day for a workshop on strip piecing. It will be a lot of fun.

Stay tuned on the progress of this one. It is a wedding gift, so it has a deadline!

Family Day

I have been working away on upholstery class projects, but this weekend finally got back to some quilting.

Yesterday was family day in Ontario and I spent the day with my mom and sister. From left to right sis is needle felting, mom is knitting and I am sewing half square triangles for a new quilt top.

It was a lovely day and I am really excited to be sewing. Next step, pressing and playing on the  design wall!

Pets Worth Sharing

So if you follow the blog you have seen several pets helping with various projects over the years and people often ask J and if we are dog walkers when they see us out with our 3 pooches. We also have 4 feline friends which brings the pet count to a lucky number 7.

Charlie is featured here with his winter get-up, he gets cold and needs a coat, but this year he was really fancy about walking with his bare feet once the temperature dipped below freezing. He doesn't love getting his boots on and walks around shaking his feet for the first few minutes, but then gets going once we are outside. I never wanted to be on of 'those' pet people, but all of the gear makes walks much more fun for all of us!

So it goes without saying that I like animals and there are few great animal links I frequent, I hope you enjoy!

Maddie (and check out Maddie's book!)

If only we had more wall space for pet photos!

Stitch a Lot, Blog a Little

So there is no excuse for my extreme blog slacking. There were a few projects that were gifts and I had to wait for them to be delivered before posting.

Featured above is my baby friend Matilda and that quilt under her was a gift from yours truly. I had been wanting to try a mostly white design with some little scrappy bits. I was quite pleased with how it turned out, so was Tilly's Mom.

Over the course of the fall I took several upholstery classes and have some updated furniture pieces to showcase. Another special quit and some Christmas gifts were also completed, but I forgot to photo graph most of them.

More to come soon. I promise!
